Instilling a sense of responsibility in youngsters
WHILE their peers are busy playing computer games and watching television, a handful of young children spend their free time practising wushu and lion dance moves.
On the first Saturday of each month there is a gathering at the Glenwood Springs Elementary School for a contra community dance. Singles and couples, from teens to those in their 80s, take part in the monthly dance get-togethers.
Forced to dance, I reinvented tai chi. I tried to recall the few times I actually joined a group of senior citizens gracefully doing kung fu in slow motion at the park early in the morning. Yet unable to actually memorize anything, I just did whatever moves my stiff body could do in free flow with my eyes wide shut.
